You ask, “Why should I become a Mo-brarian?”
Well I say, “why not, look at what you get to do!”
• You help change the “real man” attitude.
• Uniting the dozen or so male library workers in Australia to a common cause can only lead to good …. right?
• You get to be a part of a cool modern charity event that is tackling some very important issues for men.
• Your library gets a chance to promote itself to the community in a fun exciting way.
• Challange yourself and the perception of a stuffy librarian.
• You can connect with your library users and work colleague on a whole new level.
- “Whoa! Check out the Mo! I thought you were all about books!” said 19yo uni student Melissa.
- “Wait a minute … you’re not cool enough to have heard of Movember!” states young Tobi, a regular skater boy.
- “Huh, so that stuffy old Reference lady grows her Mo for Movember.” says the cheeky know it all that is in the library all the time but no one knows his name.
• When else could you challange another library user to a Mo-off???
• But the real reason to be a Mo-brarian ……. ’cause the ladies love a Mo!
Ok, I’ve joined by going here. But how can I help? What can I do now?
Well the Mo-brarians are all about raising awareness for the issues Movember seeks to address. Libraries are big buildings overflowing with information and as such they’re bound to have relevant information on men’s health. The Mo-brarians were born to promote this information!
You ask what you can do? Display the material, create a fun Movember space in your library, get your library users to take notice, generate awareness, grow a Mo – have fun! The Movember site has loads of downloads you can use to help create a Mo-display. Dont forget to add out Mo-brarian logo!
The Mo-brarians are not just participating in Movember to raise funds, but here are some ideas that worked well for us last year:
• Staff BBQ’s – great social event, hit your boss up for some sponsorship to make even more dosh.
• Gold Coin donation for a slice on Cake Day – everyone loves cake almost as much as a good Mo.
• Raffles – maybe sucker in, um I mean ask, a small child with a stuck on Mo to sell the tickets, everyone buys raffle tickets from children.
• I think fate wanted the Melbourne Cup to be held in November so we could use it as an opportunity to raise some dosh. Did someone say Movember Cup?
• Begging & guilt – The Mo-brarians would never stoop so low ……… ask your loved ones to do it.
